January Newsletter

Happy (belated) New Year from Action for Sustainable Living!

Hello and welcome to the first newsletter of 2011. This year promises to be a huge for AfSL with work that will help shape the local, and possibly even national, sustainability agenda.

The South Manchester Environmental Forum (SMEF) will bring schools, hospitals, green groups, housing associations and councilors together to discuss the future of sustainability in the area.

There is a new batch of Local Project Managers who have fantastic projects that are all across Manchester. Take a look at the LPM section of our website to see if there is anything near you that you’d like to get involved in.

A Few Small Steps, the AfSL Schools programme, is starting new work around the country. The AFSS team are starting Project Zero in Wrexham and a similar project in Richmond in Surrey, which has already got some high profile support.

It has never been easier to get involved in sustainability. For a small taste of what’s to come, read on…

South Manchester Environmental Forum (SMEF)

'SMEF' will bring people, groups and communities together to talk about sustainability. Our hope is that by discussing how local people would like to see South Manchester become a more sustainable, green and pleasant place to be, a plan of action will be decided on.

This is a great way to share good practice, strengthen networks across the area and encourage action at a local level. We hope that as people get together links between businesses, communities and groups will be forged, sparking new ideas in the process.

One aim is that South Manchester could become one of the most sustainable places in the country, even influencing the national agenda on sustainability and green living. It is important that the focus is on local priorities and concerns, so if you have an idea you would like to be included or just more information on SMEF please contact info@afsl.org.uk . The first ‘SMEF’ will take place on the 8th of February.

'SMEF' is part of the 'Green Seeds' project, which is AfSL's new initiative to promote sustainability around Manchester and further afield. For more information on Green Seeds please contact Joanne at joanne.wilkes@afls.org.uk

Richmond 'Race 2 Zero'.

A Few Small Steps helps schools in Surrey reduce carbon footprint

Race 2 Zero will see several thousand kids and families compete to reduce their carbon consumption over the next few months. Featuring competitions, presentations and energy audits, the project will see tonnes of carbon saved and thousands of people inspired to act on climate change.

Race 2 Zero has already attracted some high profile support, with MP Zac Goldsmith, who said "This is a fantastic student-led initiative that will have a real, measurable impact." AFSS will be providing mentoring support and guidance to the team on the ground.

This is a similar model to our hugely successful 'Project Zero', which took place in November last year and saw thousands of children from across Manchester reduce their carbon footprint. It got some great attention from the media, with Mark speaking on BBC Radio Manchester. A Few Small Steps is widening its scope, delivering this in new locations outside of Manchester.

The team are running a ‘Project Zero’ for schools in Wrexham, Wales also. Thousands of children will take part in reducing their school’s energy waste and learning lifelong lessons about easy ways to cuts costs and carbon emissions.
