Undoubtedly one of the most enjoyed parts of Christmas is the food and drink that comes along with it: sharing meals with family, going for drinks with friends and, of course, the traditional Christmas dinner. However, much of the food that is purchased is produced using mass farming methods and has a high transport mileage. A lot of food is thrown away as people buy more than they need. The trick is to go for quality rather than quantity when shopping. If you eat meat, an organic free-range turkey will have a more intense flavour than a battery farmed one. Source seasonal vegetables from local farmers’ markets or box schemes and fill up on traditional vegetable dishes. Leftovers can be put into the composter if you have one, rather than taking up landfill space. Chocolate, tropical fruits and even rum can be purchased fair-trade, giving the farmer a decent return while you enjoy quality produce. To get into the festive mood, organic beers and fair-trade wines are readily available. Organic spirits can be mixed with fair-trade and organic fruit juices to make tasty cocktails. |
