Artificial trees take a lot of resources to manufacture and do not biodegrade, instead taking up landfill space as people get rid of damaged trees or decide to upgrade to a bigger/better one. The average artificial tree only lasts for five to six years, although this can be extended by careful use. Buying a real tree from a supplier may seem like the environmentally friendly option as it can be turned into woodchips after use. However, natural woodland is often destroyed for large-scale fir tree plantation, damaging the local ecosystems and resulting in increasing soil acidity. One solution is to buy a pot-grown tree, which can be replanted outside and reused for several years before recycling. These trees do need care and attention, and are not guaranteed to survive replanting. Alternatively you could decorate a live outdoors tree or even sponsor a tree in a woodland. |
