MOTIVATING COMMUNITIES TO TAKE ACTION
We’re proper fed up with stuffing so much cardboard in the bin, even if it is recycled. So we’re ‘upcycling’ it into useful and attractive boxes, say to use for magazines, wastepaper or tidying chargers. You will have a choice to bring your own pre-prepared box (cut into strips) or one we prepare for you.

On Saturday 30 May, Manchester will host the national CTC/CycleNationCycling as a Solution conference which is focusing on how localcommunities, councils and NHS Trusts can work together to increase thenumber of people cycling to work, school, to the shops or for leisure.Cycling can help people respond positively to key challenges such as:climate change, the recession, style/well-being; beating traffic
There will be a Fun Day within Moss Side which will consist of,
- Face Painting/Falconry Display/Community Stalls/Sports Activities/Community Quiz and Bird Box Painting.
The event is Free Admission and will be supported by Manchester City Council/Adactus Housing/Arawak Housing Association/City South Manchester/MossCare Housing and Greater Manchester Police.

Update your wardrobe and beat the credit crunch by bringing a minimum of three items of clothing to the SUST Swap Shop at 8th Day Café on Oxford Road, Manchester on Monday 1 June, clothes drop off 5.45-6.15pm Swapping 6.15-7pm FREE if you have three items of clothing and £1 if you don't.The Swap Shop is a simple way of reusing old clothes. It's a collaboration between Action for Sustainable Living, Manchester Friends of the Earth and the Make Trade Fair Society at Manchester University.

An informative and challenging day school by researchers from the Tyndall Centre for Climate Change Research at the University of Manchester giving an overview of climate change science including its use (and non-use) in public and corporate policy and an opportunity for discussion:
- which causes more global warming: UK cows or UK aviation?
- what level of warming are we heading for at the end of this century?
- how effective is carbon trading?
- what should you look for in a carbon label?

Ayres Road traders show they care! One shopping street in anOld Trafford neighbourhood will soon be promoting its green credentials. Ayres Road traders will be joining the quest to reduce plastic carrier bag consumption with the help of community action group WOW-OT (War on Waste in Old Trafford. Shoppers who go to Ayres Road from 6 June onwards will be able to buy an environmentally friendly,reusable shopping bag for £1.50.
What is the best way to power and heat our homes under tight carbon constraints? This challenging and informative day school from researchers at the Tyndall Centre for Climate Research at the University of Manchester will provide an overview of low carbon non-renewable and renewable energy options. We will look at:
- The option just to 'go nuclear'
-Whether carbon capture and storage can save the day
- Renewable energy options including biomass, waste, wind and wave power
AfSL hosted an evening of short films and fun that exploredthe problem of climate change and discussed ways to tackle it.
The event was organised by Local Project Manager NatalieBarugh and held at St Matthews Church Hall in Stretford. It was well attendedwith 25 people turning up. The night involved the screening of several shortfilms, a talk from Marc Hudson of Manchester Climate Fortnightly, and aninteractive discussion with Sally Cott.
