Sustainable Flixton

Have you made any new year’s resolutions yet?

Maybe they include keeping the family fit and healthy, saving money and doing your bit to reduce climate change

 If so perhaps you would consider joining our group of volunteers who help to make the St. Michael’s school and the surrounding area more sustainable.

 

Here’s theidea:

Come and volunteer for an hour a week, each Sunday morning between 10 and 11am at St.Michael’s School, The Grove, Flixton, M41 6JB.

The proposed programme of events:

Jan:

11th-preparingthe ground for planting-anyone with a chainsaw to help remove over hangingbranches needed.

18th–making bird boxes and/or bird watching for the RSPB

25thMaking insect hotels-bring along spare bits of bamboo cane, straw, old pen cases,piping, roof tiles, and bricks with ventilation holes-basically anything youhave lying around that insects could make homes in.

Feb:

1st-sowingseeds/ raising beds/ bug hotel continues- any one got any old scaffolding boards?

8th-wild flower meadow preparation.

15th 22nd-HALF TERM NO MEETING

March:

1st-weeding ornamental beds

8th-veg plot work

15th-willow weaving a living willow cave

22nd-wildflowergardening

29th-vegplot work/ amphibian monitoring

April:

5th-Monitoring early Butterflies

12thand 19th- EASTER BREAK

26th-veg plot work

May:

3rd-BANKHOLIDAY

10th-Vegplot work

17th-Adopt a tree on Balmoral allotments scrumping lane/ learn about bee keeping

24th-7th-HALFTERM BREAK

June:

14th-Vegplot work/ prepare for summer fair stall

21st-BBC may be visiting us to see how we’re getting on

28th-Vegplot work

July:

5th-learnabout local moths and butterflies as pollinators

12th-veg plot

19th-summerbirds and wildflowers monitoring

END OF YEAR

(howeverthere may be the opportunity to keep the plot ticking over during the summerTBA)

 

Events maynot run as proposed, the volunteers will have a say as to what the group doesand when. Hedgelaying and path repairs are subject to funding  (applied for).

 

This volunteer work is suitablefor Scouts and Guides, Duke of Edinburgh Award students,Students,Neighbours,families and friends of the school.
