From January 31st - February 7th 2010 I will be swapping the comforts of home for ice huts, huskies and minus 25 degree temperatures, all for charity!I have chosen to undertake this Arctic survival challenge not only to highlight issues concerning climate change and the impact on fragile environments, but to also draw attention to the struggle for survival that many people face on a daily basis.I am hoping to raise at least £2000 for Action for Sustainable Living and the RSVP Trust. I know that both these charities do amazing work and have made a positive impact on the lives of many people and their communities and I am very proud to be supporting them. Between May 2008 and May 2009 I worked with Action for Sustainable Living as a Local Project Manager and also as a schools volunteer on their 'A Few Small Steps' programme, so I have seen first hand the positive impact that AfSL has on local people and communities. The work they do with local people around themes of sustainable living is immense and can only continue through their volunteers, funding and sponsorship.The RSVP Trust do charity work in both the UK and Africa. Since 1995 the Trust have made regular visits to African countries such as Rwanda, where the effects of the 1994 genocide are still evident today.RSVP are committed to providing education to the poor, in order to empower them and offer them hope. They have previously built a primary school and are working on completing a 'House of Mercy' which will provide shelter for abandoned children. |
