Hi I'm Matt. I started volunteering with Afsl in 2009, and have had a keen interest in environmental issues for as long as I can remember. I obtained a degree in Urban Development at Leeds Metropolitan University, which obviously stands me in good stead when it comes to the environmental impact that our towns and cities can have on the natural world, but also gave me an understanding of how these effects can be mitigated. Despite this, my real passion is in the area of conservation, and my vocation as a gardener has allowed me to get as close to nature as perhaps is possible in a city like Manchester! It has also given me a perspective on how we as individuals can affect our local environment, and the huge potential there is for giving nature a helping hand in our towns and cities. Did you know, for example, that the area covered by private gardens in urban areas in the UK is significantly greater than all the National Parks put together! Although gardening is infinitely preferable to being in an office I still find it necessary to escape Manchester on a fairly regular basis. Trips up to the Lake District and Scotland, for walking, sailing, and mountain biking, help to satisfy my yearning for the great outdoors. If you would like to discuss any sustainability issues, particularly conservation related ones, it would be great to hear from you. |
