Aim of the ProjectThe project seeks to confirm research which suggests that householders will invest in property-level protection against climate change if they are offered a choice of cash-equivalent rewards. For example, if a household spends £200 on energy-efficiency improvements to their home, e.g. loft insulation, they can choose from a selection of rewards worth up to £200, such as discounts on public transport. Volunteer RoleAfSL is recruiting 10–12 volunteers in the first phase of a trial to evaluate the attitudes of 300 homes in the Navigation Road area of Trafford towards climate change, energy-saving and flooding. The volunteers will also be inviting each household to take part in the second phase of the trial where residents are offered free flood protection and energy efficiency audits of their homes. On the basis of these audits each home will be provided with a report showing the physical measures they can install to protect against flooding and reduce energy consumption. A choice of cash-equivalent rewards will be offered equal to the sum of the cost of work incurred for those residents who decide to make improvements to their properties. The volunteers will also support a programme of events to both raise awareness of the project within the local community and empower residents to strengthen local resilience against the worst effects of climate change.Person SpecificationAfSL is looking for 10–12 volunteers who can spare 12 hours per month over the period June to September 2010.As each survey takes approximately 15 minutes, AfSL are looking for volunteers who feel confident in speaking to residents on their doorsteps and actively encouraging them to take part in Phase II of the trial. We are also looking for people who would enjoy running events and stalls in the local community to promote the benefits of the project. This project is ideal for anyone who is looking to gain experience in the sustainability sector and any industry that requires a lot of contact with the public. An interest in climate change, energy efficiency and/or flooding would be an advantage; however, all volunteers will receive training on these topics. For further information please contact the Project Coordinator, Tony Li, at tony.li@afsl.org.uk
