My actions to improve sustainability are focused in the areas of soil care, local food, and energy security. The community action group I set up in Whalley range with AfSL, was about soil-building. It involved collecting fallen autumn leaves which is a great way to excercise, with lots of brushing, sweeping and shovelling, followed by moving heavy bags of leaves! In the longer term the project aims to get a fitness instructor to advise people on technique to get the best results from this kind of 'Eco Gym'. The leaves are now being allowed to decompose into a 'mulch' which can be used to help control weeds in a similar way to woodchips. They also help build slow-release moisture retention in the soil, and good texture. This kind of mulch is a great resource for permaculture gardening, a way of harmonising with natural systems for more efficient and sustainable food production.
