Action for Sustainable Living

connecting people, sharing resources and supporting communities to live more sustainably

Hi to July

Welcome,

Tis time again for a concisely podded news instalment delivering you with lots of delectable newsy niblets from Action for Sustainable Living. Firstly we're both sad and excited to say we're moving. St Wilfrids has been a faithful old base for us, but on the other hand, working in the Northern Quarter will be pretty cool. Check it out we're in Fourways House on Hilton Street (above Drip Bar).

Despite the big changes, we're still managing to pedal sustainable living. In the recent GM workplace cycle challenge we acheived 100% staff participation... so there you have it literally pedalling sustainability! We'd also like to say a big warm welcome to our new wave of LPMs who are energising AfSL with some exciting new projects. You know who you are!!!

In terms of events and things to immerse yourself in, this month is as busy and green as a bee in a field...

Calling all Chorltonites or anyone who frequents the Chorlton area, be a part of making the Chorlton Big Green Festival 2011 bigger and better than ever! The first festival committee meeting will take place Sept 23rd 7:30pm but it's never too early to get in touch to get on board. We'll be nominating and voting on new roles at this meeting. Please let Erika know if you want to get involved, erika.nagae@afsl.org.uk

AfSL are partnering with Age Concern to develop and run a growing project at their funky community centre in Sharston. The project includes building new raised beds and continued running of the project. We're seeking a garden coordinator to lead on this, the successful person would be a Local Project Manager for AfSL and receive support and training as such. Contact volunteer@afsl.org.uk for more info.

Abundance Trafford is a new project, we pick surplus or unwanted fruit from gardens and public trees and distribute it to disadvantaged local groups and communities in the Old Trafford, Stretford and Urmston areas. We are also keen to collect and distribute surplus vegetables from allotments. We are holding our next meeting on Wednesday 4 August at 7.30pm at Firswood Community Centre, Longford Park The Quadrant, Greatstone Road, Stretford, M32 8QS. The community centre is just inside the park behind the old library building. Refreshments will be available. Please come along, or get in touch, abundancetrafford@gmail.com or call 07941 685296

The Regenesis Squared Allotment launch event will take place on the 7th August with a BBQ and an AfSL stall. But before then some work still needs to be done including moving the remaining soil and compost to beds, constructing the shed, clearing the pathways including some skimming and laying stones down. If anybody out there can't get enough of being helpful, receiving thanks and lending their muscle, please come down from 10am Saturday's the 24th or 31st July, or contact debbie.rhind@afsl.org.uk for more info.

We're seeking volunteers or energy efficiency "experts" to help Erika & Annabel with new Energy Saving Competition to take place in Gorton South in conjunction with Affinity Sutton housing association. Please contact annabel.bradbury@afsl.org.uk or erika.nagae@afsl.org.uk if this sounds like you.

And finally to top the cake with a cherry, our ethical business of the month Gaeia balances money with morals offering ethical investment advice. Look them up if you're lucky enough to have the odd penny to squirrel away.

Until next time,
