Whalley Range

Whalley Range is located in between Chorlton and Hulme and is home to a multicultural community. Although it does not have a community centre, it has a range of proactive groups such as The Whalley Range Forum, Friends of Alexandra Park and Organisers of the Celebrate Festival.

Whalley Range has a lot of potential and AfSL would like to work with local residents, community groups, schools and organisations to make it a hub for sustainable activity. There are many opportunities for people to get involved, get to know to others in the community and work together to make the area a more environmentally friendly place to live.

We are currently in the beginning stages of setting up a 'gardening club' in the area with a view to providing information for residents on various gardening related topics, be it organic gardening, composting, planting or maintaining.  As LPM for the area I would love have a group set up that could lend there green fingers to maintaining public green areas, giving advice to residents on gardening issues etc.

Over the next month I hope to hold a meeting in Whalley Range to discuss the idea with residents and see how we can move the project forward. I hope to organise an 'information day' at one of the local parks which will involve some workshops and hands on gardening creativity.

If you like the idea and feel like expanding your knowledge of all things green please do get in touch! All suggestions are very welcome as the idea is still very much in its infancy.

Like many people today I am very aware of the sustainability and enviromental issues that have become such a huge part of everyday life. I try to be as aware and responsible in addressing these issues on a day to day basis and enjoy learning from other on ways in which we can improve the way we live to benefit the enviroment and those around us. I'm really looking forward to getting to know and working with the residents of Whalley Range and helping them in addressing the sustainability issues they feel are effecting their community.

I moved to Manchester to become involved with the increasingly active sustainability community here. To me, the aspect of sustainability that is most important is that it revolves around people respecting people, animals and the environment. That and experimenting with making yummy vegetarian, seasonal food and getting my feet dirty building with cob!  As a Volunteer Mentor for AfSL I hope to encourage people to think about the effects of their actions, to educate them about sustainable living and provide enthusistic support to those wishing to become more sustainable.
