HEAT is a local initiative established by AfSL and local residents to help Hulme save money and reduce CO2 emissions through community energy saving measures.

HEAT members develop local awareness raising and the training of local “energy champions” to go about setting up co-operative buying systems and deliver affordable warmth systems across all neighbourhoods in the Hulme community.

Through regular meetings and input from across the community and beyond HEAT's aims were established as: - Understanding local attitudes and practices - Local people creating local solutions - Bulk buying of energy efficient products and services - Funding for large scale energy saving campaigns - Developing local skills and involvement - Working together as a community

HEAT projects to date include the award winning HEAT Newsletter; a series of talks about climate change and energy saving; university students project work carrying out local surveys and distributing energy saving products. HEAT has distributed over 2000 low energy light-bulbs and 3000 save-a-flush toilet hippos.
