Websites full of energy games are springing up all over the internet, intended to teach children and remind the rest of us how to save energy and go green. Their energy-saving message is being highlighted at a critical time for internet users, as internet use and energy demands are at an all-time high. ManagEnergy is full of games for energy-conscious children (or adults!) including Switch It Off!, Ronaldo vs ElectroViper, and BioValley Racer. The games cover such themes as creating biofuels, using low-energy light bulbs, and switching off radios and TVs. The games are suited to a variety of abilities, and will definitely be enjoyed by adults and children alike! Sites such as the BBC, the European Environmental Agency, and the National Grid for Learning have also provided games to make learning about energy-saving fun for kids. As well as arcade-style games, quizzes such as Watt’s The Answer test your knowledge of energy-saving issues and encourage you to learn more. The internet is full of ways to encourage us to save energy. A site called America’s Greenest Campus describes itself as the “first nationwide contest among colleges to reduce the carbon footprints of their students, faculty, alumni and staff.” It encourages entire campuses to work together to reduce their carbon emissions. To date, over 400 American colleges and universities have signed up, and some have reduced their CO2 emissions by as much as five percent. These initiatives come at a good time: it was recently revealed that Facebook alone spends over $1 million per month on electricity. The data centres that support such popular websites use huge amounts of power, and often have to rely on petrol generators to keep up with online demand. By encouraging more sustainable energy habits through these fun-tastic energy-saving games, we can stop energy use spiralling, even if it means less time on-line!
