I joined AFSL as Sustainability Coordinator in August 2009. My role is to
recruit volunteer Local Project Managers in the south and east Manchester
areas to initiate and implement sustainability projects in their
communities. The goal is to educate and encourage people to live more
sustainably, and for them to in turn spread the word to their friends,
family and community. Being an LPM is an amazing means of contributing
positive change within a particular neighbourhood.
In 2008 I was Ben & Jerry's Climate Change College ambassador.
My project involved promoting composting with worm bins to reduce the
amount of food waste going to landfill. The basic idea was to "FEED
THE EARTH, STARVE THE LANDFILL" and in doing so combat climate change
through global "worming". I spent just under 2 weeks in Alaska and the Arctic in the Spring of 2008 studying the effects of climate change in the arctic environment.
While my concentration recently has been devoted to composting and
worms, I have an all-round interest in being as green as I can and
doing my bit to reduce my eco footprint while encouraging others to do
the same. I find that people are always amazed at how easy and
fulfilling getting into a sustainable routine can be; especially when they realise that being
environmentally savvy not only helps to reduce factors such as waste
and emissions but tends to result in lower household bills as well -- a
win-win situation!
