The Sustainable Student Housing (SSH) project aims to bring like-minded
students together in a domestic environment to consider and practice living as
sustainably as possible. To help shape the project and get you all
involved from the beginning we’re running a workshop session in the Cameron Committee Room, 3rd Floor, MMUnion at 2:45pm (for 3:00pm) on Thursday the 15th December 2011.
By bringing the chosen
students together into a chosen house, we aim to reduce our green house
gas emissions, carbon footprint and
natural resource use, change behaviour of the participants/tenants,
raise
awareness of sustainable living in the community through open-house
events and improve participant health and well-being, also showing that
living sustainably can be a cheaper
and healthier alternative. The project will also make money to invest
back into social elements of
the project.
The project will be in it's
set-up phase up until September 2012 when the house mates will be able
to move in to the chosen house. During the next year/phase there will be
open house events to show how we are living, the benefits of doing so
and to raise awareness of the issues and build community cohesion. After
that, the hope is that first year house mates will go out and set up
their own SSH house with the experience they've gained and the support
of the project leader. We want to build an SSH community in Manchester,
then beyond, including both students and non-students.
