Business

We offer a range of workshops and programmes to facilitate positive environmental change within your business, organisation or community. Our motivating Training Coordinators use a tailored approach which ensures that each session is focused on your desired outcomes and relevant to your specific needs.

We have been working with businesses, organisations and Corporate Social Responsibility initiatives for a number of years during which time we have provided excellent support towards achieving sustainability goals. Using fun and participatory methods we engage with employees right from the start and inspire positive action towards sustainability for the long-term.

Greater Fire and Rescue Service

(Reduced Carbon footprint by 16% since 2009)

Working alongside Greater Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS), our objectives were to raise awareness of, embed and celebrate sustainable practices across GMFRS fire stations by supporting fire station employees to become Environmental Champions.

The project started with workshops for the prospective Environmental Champions facilitated by GMRFS Sustainability Team and AfSL Training Coordinators. The workshops aimed to raise aspirations of the officers, enhance their understanding of sustainability and inspire action.

Following these successful workshops, GMRFS Sustainability developed the “Green Hose Awards” for Greater which provides a checklist of sustainability actions, with a league table showing the ‘greenest’ fire station published weekly. The awards then celebrated the station that achieved the most actions.

“Looking back, it’s incredible to see how much has been achieved”.

Joe Hulme, Sustainability Advisor, Greater Fire and Rescue Service

“The environmental champions have moved from being ‘the people who turn the lights out’ to developing projects that have significant cost savings for the organisation and benefits for the environment”.

Radisson Hotel,

AfSL connected two of our volunteer Local Project Managers (LPMs) to the Radisson-Edwardian hotel, who wanted to engage more with the local community and were looking for a replacement gardener for the derelict roof-top garden.

The LPMs worked with hotel staff to understand the Radisson’s longer-term aim of operating in a more sustainable manner.  They enhanced the rooftop garden, helping to create a green oasis in the heart of the city centre where staff can relax, kitchen waste can be composted and nature can take its natural course.

So far they’ve installed two 210 litre blue water butts and sub-irrigated planters, sorting out water harvesting and saving on water consumption overall and a composting area has been created. Raised beds have been treated with effective micro-organism liquid feed and been planted up with herbs and edible flowers which will be used in the hotel’s salads. Going forward there are on-going plans for future bee keeping and vertical planting.

Carillion Plc.

Action for Sustainable Living was invited to team up with Carillion at their offices during Sustainability Week (5th June 2013). A multinational facilities management and construction services company, Carillion is a sustainability-focused business.  They are working towards carbon neutrality, not just for themselves, but for their customers as well, and they aim to be the best in class at reducing waste, managing use of water and raw materials, and protecting biodiversity wherever they operate. Their annual Sustainability Week is a way to encourage and maintain this ethos amongst Carillion employees.

With a mixture of fun hands-on activities and inspiring stories about environmental 2013_06_05 Carillion event 022projects around the city, Action for Sustainable Living encouraged the workforce to spend their lunch break imagining a sustainable Carillion and making pledges to contribute towards it. Ideas ranged from the big to the very small, the aim to encourage people to think about their own energy usage and changes personally relevant to them. Even the most reluctant participants couldn’t help but get stuck in, making bee-friendly seed bombs to take home; it seems all it takes is a bit of mud to get everyone excited about sustainability!
