Some may think its a bit grim up north, but environmentally friendly hosting company Athenaeum Limited have discovered a way to power their websites using Californian sunshine Leeds, England, UK - 9 October 2005: www.ecologicalhosting.com is launched by English Internet hosting company Athenaeum Limited (established 1999) to promote their new and unique renewable energy powered web site hosting services in the UK. They have taken action and made a large commitment to protect the environment by meeting all of their electrical requirements using green, natural, renewable energy. Their registered office in West Yorkshire, England uses grid supplied wind power and has done so since the early days. In order to ensure that all their computer systems operate on 100% renewable power supply generation, August 2005 saw the move of their main hosting infrastructure from a prominent UK data centre to a smaller facility in California that operates entirely off the grid and is powered directly from over 120 solar panels. The California data centre may be smaller, but still boasts multiple very high speed Internet links and full UPS (uninterruptible power supply) battery and natural gas generator backup. The operators are a small family business much like Athenaeum and provide a very high level of support if needed. Most data centres across the world are powered by electricity generated using fossil fuels. This not only uses up valuable oil reserves, but also adds huge quantities of carbon dioxide to the atmosphere creating a substantial negative effect on the environment. By using this new service, business and individuals can send out a clear message to their customers and friends that they care about the environment.
