WOW OT - War on Waste Old Trafford

  • What? - A group to target the issues of waste and litter in Old Trafford. We bring together local residents and organisations to discuss how we can improve Old Trafford’s environment by looking at the causes of litter and fly tipping as well as the remedies.
  • Who? - The Action Group is open to all....  representatives from the local community, tenants and residents associations in addition to Groundwork, EMERGE and the local council.
  • Why? - To facilitate local people to take action.  There is already a fantastic amount of action in the area and we aim not to re-invent the wheel but to bring existing groups and individuals together with other concerned individuals.

WOWOT have now been meeting for over a year for lively discussion around the issues of waste and litter in Old Trafford... and what to do with it. The group has also been considering how recycling plays a major part in our lives.

To date the group has:

  • Worked with Groundwork to produce a Green Christmas Recycling Directory
  • Worked with local housing trusts to provide recycling advice alongside their skip drives
  • Produced a vibrant waste display for the Childers’s library in Old Trafford
  • Engaged with over 200 individuals living in Old Trafford on the issues of waste and recycling
  • Written letters calling for action
  • Worked towards its own interactive website…. www.wow-ot.org.uk

Action for Sustainable Living aims not to ’run’ Action Groups but to set them up to be self sustaining, an important part of our philosophy. It was made quite clear at the outset of this project that AfSL were here to support the group and that the group was in charge of its own direction. Already members of the group have begun helping out with typing, setting up and further research.

There has already been a fantastic amount of action on waste in the area, it is hoped this group will work with and add to this base of existing action. To find out about our next meeting or for more info call: 0845 108 6241 or e-mail [email protected]

Recycling Action Group, Chorlton and Whalley Range

  • Are you interested in recycling?
  • Do you want to meet like minded people and take action to solve local recycling problems?

If you live in or near Chorlton or Whalley Range, Action for Sustainable Living would like to hear from you.

Help us shape the development of the Action Group and carry it forward.  Possible areas of interest for the group might be:

  • Composting
  • Battery Recycling
  • Litter collection
  • Kerbside Recycling
  • Plastic Recycling
  • Reusing Rubbish

and more!

After our initial meeting, we don't think the area needs action on litter at the moment.  We will be working closely with local community groups and door knocking in the area to find out what would be more helpful.

We also hope to work more with the Asian population in Whalley Range and find out more about their needs. If you or anyone you know could act as a volunteer interpreter then please get in touch. AFSL would love to hear from local people who would like to join the waste group and give feedback about problems in the area.

Timber Recycling Project

  • Are you frustrated about the amount of good timber thrown away in skips and ending up in landfill?

  • Would you like to contribute to a scheme salvaging good quality timber and selling it on at affordable prices?

  • Do you have a space available that could be used as a timber collection point: an underused garage, a covered side ally, access to a warehouse?

  • Have you got a few hours a week spare that could be used to help sort the ‘good’ from the ‘bad’ timber?

If the answer is yes to any of the above, Action for Sustainable Living would love to hear from you.

We are very keen to set up a timber recycling project in Chorlton, Whalley Range, Old Trafford or Hulme.

The project would work by good timber being salvaged by local people and taken to a central collection point. When enough timber has been stored, TRIM (Timber Recycling in ) may be able to collect it for us to sell on at their base in Gorton, East .

TRIM collects waste timber and sorts into re-usable grades for sale to the public for DIY and recyclable grades for making into chipboard, animal bedding etc. They offer low cost recycled timber for individual and community projects and practical advice on construction methods. They also offer a safe, open air construction space for one-off projects.

Another option would be to run a smaller scale operation, local people being able to both drop off and buy good quality timber.

If you are interested in helping make this project a reality, or if you know of someone that might be interested in this project please contact Claire Wheeler on 0845 108 6241 or email [email protected]

School Pupils Pledge: "Reduce, Reuse and Recycle"

GlobeGlobePlease tick one or more options below, fill in your details and click on the Submit button

We will contact you by email in a little while to see if you have kept your pledge!

YOU can make a BIG difference!

Thank you!  J

I pledge to:

REDUCE

Take my own bag to the shops when I go shopping

Choose food that has less packaging over food that has too much unnecessary packaging

Encourage my parents to buy their fruit and vegetables loose, so less packaging is thrown away in the bin

REUSE

Re-fill a plastic bottle rather than buy a new one when I want to take a drink to school

Buy rechargeable batteries next time I need to buy batteries

Bring my lunch in to school in a resealable container rather than plastic or foil wrappings

RECYCLE

Find out where my nearest plastic recycling bank is

Make sure all the drinks cans I use are recycled by putting them in a can bin at school or by taking them home to put out with the rest of the recycling

Ask my teacher whether the school can use recycled paper
