City Centre Manchester

The Boundary of Manchester

AfSL aims to provide City Centre residents with opportunities to live in a more sustainable way. We do this by first, providing people with relevant information and resources that help make small steps towards big changes. Second, we encourage residents to sign our 'Sustainability Pledges' that provide framework for making such changes. Third, we encourage members of the City Centre community to organise themselves into Action Groups focussed on a particular sustainability issue, such as waste reduction or access to local and Fair Trade products at the City Centre, etc.

These actions are needed foremost because City Centre is a vibrant locality, albeit lacking in a strong sense of identity and of community. AfSL fosters sense of community and self-worth by encouraging residents to take responsibility for their own lives and to form Action Groups based on shared concerns. Moreover, City Centre is Manchester's facade and as such should serve an example of a community living sustainably, looking clean and acting friendly toward other people and environment.

Oxana Poberejnaia, AfSL Local Project Manager for City Centre Manchester. She is looking forward to learning about your concerns, ideas and propositions for actions.

SUST Swap Shop

SUST Swap Shop 08 Oct 2007

Following the success of the Clothes Amnesty at SUST Fashion Show 06, a group of AfSL volunteers got together to coordinate a regular Swap Shop which started in Oct 07. The first event on 5 of October 2007 was also a fantastic success with lots of positive feedback from the 60 attendees and 12 bags of excess clothing generated for charity shops. The group supported by AfSL and Manchester Friends of the Earth now meets regularly to expand the event to new and dizzying heights!
